Lakhimpur anti-erosion work not complete: NHPC

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 6 The NHPC, dismissing media reports, today clarified that its anti-erosion measure at Lakhimpur is only a demo work being carried out by Flexituff, which is still in progress.

The work has been discontinued temporarily due to increase in river discharge, owing to unprecedented and untimely rainfall in the area. Due to increase in river discharge on account of incessant rainfall in the area for more than a week, the bottom layer of geo-synthetic Trap Bag, which has been laid for a stretch for around 64 m, got submerged. It is brought out here that the portion of works done by Flexituff till date is intact and stable and no damage has occurred to the structure, it said in a statement.

It added that even before start of the demo work, a secondary channel of the Subansiri was flowing towards the already inundated banks of the Dakhin Rupahi even during the lean season of December/January, which was also taken into account for providing adequate safety measures by NHPC.

It further said that till date there had been no damage to any household there, and that even the houses which were critically located along the banks since the previous monsoon were not yet damaged.

Due to increase in river discharge, discharge in secondary channel also increased, which caused some erosion along the already inundated river bank. NHPC, on the request of the villagers, undertook immediate protection measures along the critical zones so that there was no further damage, it said.
