Lakhi Barthakur�s death mourned

GUWAHATI, June 21 � Socio-cultural organisation Jyotirupa has condoled the death of eminent cultural activist and actor Lakhi Barthakur terming it as an irreparable loss to the cultural society of Assam. A statement from the organisation�s general secretary Naren Hazarika said that the people of Assam would always remember him for his valuable contributions in the field of culture. The organisation prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

Earlier, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi mourned the death of the actor on Friday terming Barthakur as a great actor, who enriched the State�s cultural spheres in a stellar manner.

Cultural Affairs Minister Bismita Gogoi also condoled his death and conveyed her sympathy to the bereaved family members. Various other organisations, including AASU, AJYCP have condoled Barthakur�s death. The staff members and employees of the Assam State AIDS Control Society (ASACS) have expressed deep sorrow at the sudden death of actor, writer and producer of Assam, Lakhi Barthakur.

In a condolence meeting presided over by the Project Director, ASACS, Chandan Baruah, the members recalled his association with ASACS, especially his contribution as Master Trainer and Resource Person of Folk Media Campaign for HIV/AIDS awareness since the year 2011. � Staff Reporter

Special classes on astronomy

GUWAHATI, June 21 � The Assam Science Society has planned to hold special classes on the basic concepts of astronomy every Saturday and Sunday between July 4 and 26 next for the benefit of the students and other persons interested in astronomy.

According to a statement issued by the Science Society, sky viewing programmes will also be organised with these special classes, on those days. Interested students and other persons should enroll their names with the Khanapara headquarters of Science Society by June 30, as seats are limited, said the Society in its statement.
