Lajong go down fighting, Abahoni in final

GUWAHATI, Sept 13 � Riding on an extra time goal by substitute Alfaz Ahmed, Abahoni Limited, Dhaka booked a berth in the title clash of the Bharat Ratna Lokapriya Bordoloi Trophy Football Tournament.

In the second semifinal of the championship at the Nehru Stadium here today, the Dhaka team edged past a second string but fighting Shillong Lajong Football Club by a solitary goal.

After a dry regulation 90 minutes, substitute Alfaz, who came into the ground in the second half, fired home in the 22nd minute of extra time off a 25-yard set piece. Alfaz beat Lajong custodian Marcus Basumatary at the far corner of the frame with a right-footed swerving shot.

The Lajong team, comprising of young players, put up a spirited show and contained their fancied opponent for 112 minutes. Their first team left for Silchar for their Federation Cup qualifying tournament and the Shillong club had to field their second team. But the young batch showed their class and made the Dhaka players run for their money.

The Dhaka team, comprising of three Ghana players, however, created some openings in the later part of the match. Ntim Twum Frank missed three easy sitters midway through the second session.

Now in the final, Abahoni will play against Three Star Club of Nepal on September 15.
