Lack of qualified cardiologist hits SMCH

By Staff Correspondent

SILCHAR, Aug 7 - The Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) is desperately looking for a cardiologist to treat patients.

According to sources, while Dr PC Sharma, the former HoD of Cardiology at the hospital was transferred in 2016, Dr Bornali Dutta, who was supposed to replace him from Guwahati Medical College and Hospital in July last year did not join services for even a day. Even as there are doctors attending patients now, but lack of qualified doctors with DM degree has resulted in an acute crisis at the lone medical college in south Assam putting patients at the receiving end.

Sources at the SMCH said that Dr Dutta has been transferred to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital.

When asked about the situation, SMCH superintendent Dr Anindya Sundar Baishya said, Since Dr Dutta did not join, the post has been blocked so far. But now, the post is lying vacant and we are looking for a cardiologist with great expectations in the interest of the people of Barak Valley and also adjoining areas. Should anyone join the hospital, the government is even ready to offer blank cheques to the doctor concerned to fill up the salary amount as per his or her wish.

It may be mentioned that the on an average as many as eight patients get admitted per month at the Department of Cardiology for pacemaker implant. However, it is learnt that the facility of transplantation of pacemakers, which is also free of cost, was stopped at the hospital due to absence of qualified doctors in the department.
