BARPETA, Oct 5 � Lack of proper education is the main cause of the backwardness of the Muslim community. This was the view expressed by a few experts in a seminar at Gomafulbari in Barpeta district recently.
The seminar ,�Causes of underdevelopment of Muslims and ways of remedy� was organised by Samuhik Gyan Vikash Kendra, Gomafulbari at Gomafulbari Senior Madrassa campus. It was conducted by Ahmad Hussain Khan, former principal of Madhya Kamrup College.
Addressing the seminar, Dr Ataur Rahman, retired professor of the Department of Physics, Gauhati University said that only proper education can save the community from doom. He stated that a class of people deviating from the modern education system cannot develop at all in the true sense of the term. He indicated that the education provided by the madrassa is useless, which cannot cope with the modern needs.
Rahman said that the Muslims of today do not follow the principles of Koran and Hadis as these scriptures do not call for avoiding education. Indicating the reluctance of this community towards science and technology, the professor made it very clear that people who do not advocate science and technology have no right to use the inventions of modern science.
Strongly advocating in favour of female education, Rahman said that when a male is educated, only a man is educated, but when a woman is educated, a family and a clan is educated.
Addressing the seminar, Kamruzzaman Ahmed, retired engineer also advocated female education. He also insisted upon the proper use of funds allocated by the Government under various schemes for minority development. He also narrated in brief about the necessity of adopting good habits for development of the individuals and the community as a whole.
Moulana Abdul Basid, a renowned Muslim saint said that while the importance of religious faith cannot be ruled out, we must adopt uptodate education for existence.
A number of personalities of this locality with distinguished contributions in different fields, right from agriculture to culture, were feted in the meeting. Some brilliant students were also felicitated.
