By Staff Correspondent

JORHAT, June 24 - Aditya Pani Phukon, general secretary of Veer Lachit Sena (VLS) was arrested on Friday in connection with a case registered at the Jorhat Police Station on June 7 after the Jorhat Bar Association (JBA) lodged a complaint against the organisation on behalf of all JBA members.

The JBA had lodged an FIR alleging that some VLS leaders posted a video recently in a social media site threatening lawyers of JBA and also using highly deregotary and objectionable language against them.

VLS is a social organisation reportedly having its central office in Guwahati. The Officer-in-charge of Jorhat Police Station Hemen Das said that Phukon was arrested as he was one of the persons who appeared in the video uploaded in a social media platform.

Das also said that Phukon was released on Saturday after issuing him a notice by the police as per the provision of law. Das said that police were looking for the other accused persons who were seen in the objectionable video.

In a complaint to the police, the JBA alleged that the persons appearing in the said video claimed them to be VLS leaders and leveled wild allegations against JBA members, that they (advocates) were working on caste and community lines and against the interest of indigenous people of the State.

In another incident, police on Friday evening arrested two persons - Saurav Das and Phukon Das - on charges of assaulting Anjan Kumar Borthakur, an official of the Public Health Engineering Department at Puja Dubi area here while the latter had visited the area while on office duty.
