Lachit Divas observed at Sivasagar

SIVASAGAR, Nov 24 - Along with the rest of the State, Lachit Divas was observed through a public meeting organised by Rongpur Prachin Kirti Sinha Sangrakshan Samity at Lachit Park near the Central Market, Sivasagar today.

Bidit Das, ADC, Sivasagar inaugurated the meeting. In his speech, Das said that the battle of Saraighat was a decisive battle for the land and its people. Lachit�s heroism and patriotism is worthy of emulation for every Assamese, he added. Releasing the souvenir, journalist Anamuddin Ahmed said that Lachit�s heroic feat at Saraighat was made possible by his inclusive policy of harnessing soldiers of all castes and communities and it was the absence of the same that brought disaster to the Ahoms during Mir Jumla�s invasion. He said that a section of historians and politicians today have been downplaying the role of Bagh Hazarika alias Ismail Siddiqui, who fought valiantly along Lachit Borphukan to defeat the Mughals.

In the forenoon session, a patriotic poem recitation competition among school children was conducted and awards were presented in presence of Mridusmita Sinha, Chairperson, Sivasagar Municipal Board, social worker Jayanta Rajkonwar, former president, Asom Kabi Sanmilan Prema Gogoi, Arun Gogoi, Safikur Rahman and Sarat Hazarika and the statue of Bir Lachit Borphukan was garlanded and tributes were paid to the legendary warrior by Umesh Gogoi.

In another meeting organised by Ahom Chora and Tai Ahom Yuva Chatra Sanmilan on the Shivadoul premises, Pradip Borgohain, adviser, AASU Sivasagar presided over the meeting and spoke on Lachit�s patriotism that changed the course of Assam�s history.
