KSU locks up office of NEIGRIHMS Director

By Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG, May 13 - The Khasi Students Union (KSU) today locked up the office of North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) Director demanding his immediate removal.

The director Dr DM Thapa has alleged that illegal business is being carried out at the Institute by the head of the Cardiology department of stents and pacemakers.

However, due to the allegation and the denial by the Cardiology head Dr Animesh Mishra work came to a standstill in the past week. A patient at the department passed away recently. The office chamber of the Director has been closed and we demand from the government he should be removed immediately from the Institute for playing with the lives of the patients, KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar said.

The lock was later broken open in the presence of a magistrate by the police.

The KSU president was followed by 100 members and general secretary Donald V Thabah at the Institute. The students organisation held the Director responsible for the present crisis in the Institute.

The KSU said the Director must take full responsibility for the death of a woman at the Institute. The organisation also said the Institute is a place to save peoples lives and not be the cause of someones death.

Marngar further said the KSU would continue to agitate if the government fails to remove the Director. The students organisation also blamed the Meghalaya Government for letting the situation go out of hand.

The State Government is not serious about the issue, Margnar alleged. The State Government has held a meeting with the doctors at the Cardiology department, but not with the Director.

The Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has said he would be briefing the Union Health Ministry about the situation in the Institute, but till now there is nothing to suggest if the matter was taken up.
