By Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG, Feb 3 - It was a red letter day for the Hynniewtrep community of Meghalaya as the Quran, the religious book of Islam, was yesterday released in Khasi language after a painstaking effort of 12 years of translation work.

The translation of the Holy Book, Ka Kuran was part of an initiative of Seng Bhalang Islam, Shillong, a city-based organisation.

The translation work began over a decade back and after years of consultations, editing by scholars and experts, it was released. The release of the book was hailed by the Muslim community in the State.

The translated book was released by Phulbari MLA, SG Estamur Mominin here who termed the occasion as historic. He said that over the years the Koran was translated in several languages across the world, but this is the first time its being translated in Khasi.

Several people would come to know what the Koran teaches about and it would benefit people across communities. Its important that people read the Koran carefully and inculcate its meaning into their lives, Mominin said.

He also lauded the efforts of Seng Bhalang Islam which took up the difficult task of translating the book into Khasi.

South Shillong MLA, Sanbor Shullai said, with the translation in the local language several people would able to read and understand the teachings in it.

Seng Bhalang Islam president, Mubarak Lyngdoh said people had been asking for the translated version of the Koran and therefore work started over a decade ago and after all these years the book has been released.
