Kopili project causing flash floods: Mahanta

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 8 Drawing the attention of the State Government to the devastations caused by recurring dam-induced flash floods in the Kapili river, leader of the Opposition Prafulla Mahanta while moving a call attention motion in the Assembly said that the districts of Nagaon, Morigaon and Kamrup were bearing the brunt of the floods with no

intervention forthcoming from the Government towards checking the floods and rehabilitating the affected people.

Mahanta said that the Kapili hydel project under the NEEPCO was behind the flash floods, as water was being released from it without any prior warning.

There have been recurring damages to standing crops and property because of the dam-induced floods. To make matters worse, neither have the affected people been compensated nor any concrete measures taken to check the floods. Things have come to such a pass that people are now reluctant to pursue agriculture, Mahanta said, adding that the villagers were not getting any power from the hydro-electricity plant.

In his reply, Water Resources Minister Prithvi Majhi said that steps had been taken for strengthening and repairing the embankment network in the affected areas. A few projects have already been executed while some were under implementation, he added.

Majhi said that the agriculturists were being provided with paddy seedlings. He further assured that the Government would take up the matter of providing prior warning before release of excess water with the NEEPCO authorities.
