Kolkata Police chief arrives in Shillong to face CBI interrogation

By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, Feb 8 - West Bengal and Meghalaya Police are coordinating for the stay and CBI interrogation of Kolkata Police chief Rajeev Kumar, who arrived here this evening.

Kumar will be interrogated by the Central probe agency tomorrow in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam. He will be interrogated at two places once at the CBIs office at Oakland and then at the NEHU guest house here, a source told The Assam Tribune.

The Kolkata Police chiefs stay has been kept confidential following a request from the West Bengal Government as Kumar wants the least media attention.

He is staying at a city hotel, the source said, adding that Kumar would leave the State capital tomorrow evening after the interrogation.

According to an official, the West Bengal Police got in direct touch with the Meghalaya Police for logistical support and the CBI has nothing to do with it. The CBI is only concerned with the interrogation, the rest is on the State Government, the official added.

Kumar has been directed by the Supreme Court to appear before the CBI in Shillong. This direction was given after Kumar avoided interrogation by the CBI on several occasions in the past.

On Sunday last, a CBI team went to arrest him, but Kolkata Police personnel took the CBI officials to a police station. The Supreme Court has now ruled that Kumar cannot be arrested or coerced, but he has to cooperate with the CBI during the questioning faithfully.

The CBI has accused Kumar of tampering with evidence related to the Saradha chit fund scam during the course of his investigation into the case. The Kolkata Police chief headed the Special Investigation Team formed by the West Bengal Government to probe the scam.

Meanwhile, a team of CBI officials has also arrived here. A five-member CBI team will grill the Kolkata Police chief.
