Kolkata Police chief allowed to return by CBI

By Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG, Feb 13 - Kolkata Police chief Rajeev Kumar has been given a respite with CBI agreeing to let him return to Kolkata after a grilling of almost 30 hours during the past five days at the CBI office here.

Although officials had said that Kumar would be questioned for some more time, the CBI today decided that Kumar would be allowed to leave to attend some of his urgent pending work in Kolkata.

Officials said that Kumar prayed that he be granted permission to return to Kolkata as he has to prepare his reply to the contempt petition filed by CBI against him and two other senior officers in the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, Kumar arrived at the CBIs office at about 9.30 am today and his questioning continued till 12.30 pm. Thereafter he was allowed to leave for Kolkata.

Kumar has also been questioned relating to the Rose Valley scam and CBI officers specifically involved with the investigation were called in and questioned the Kolkata police chief.

So far, apart from Kumar, the CBI has questioned former Trinamool Congress MP, Kunal Ghosh in the Saradha multi-crore rupees chit fund scam. The questioning was done by the CBI in line with a Supreme Court order.

Ghosh and Kumar were also cross examined by the CBI for two days. The former TMC MP has alleged that Kumar tampered with evidence while investigating the scam as the police chief.

Although Kumar has returned, the CBI is likely to question him again. Officials have also said that Saradha CMD Sudipta Sen and his close aide Debjani Mukherjee would also be questioned.
