By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 29 - The leadership of Asam Sahitya Sabha on Saturday sat for a meeting here with 17 organisations of the Koch-Rajbongshi community of the State to discuss various issues.

The main issue that got more space at the meeting, was the long-standing demand for Schedule Tribe status to the Koch-Rajbongshi community. The meeting also elaborately discussed the various problems being faced by the Koch-Rajbongshi people residing in the BTR areas.

Representatives of the community attending the meeting alleged that the Koch-Rajbongshi people are becoming second-class citizens in the BTR. Hence it is the need of the hour to grant tribal status to give justice to the indigenous community. They also raised the demand for reservation of Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly constituency seats in the State for the community.

After the meeting, Sabha outgoing president Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi said they would move the State government to consider the demands of Koch-Rajbongshi community and to solve all their issues before the upcoming Assembly election in the State.
