Koch-Rajbongshi tag opposed

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 1 - The All Assam Koch Students Union (AAKSU) has denounced the move to describe the Koches of the State as Koch-Rajbongshis as a conspiracy to make the ethnic group a part of the Aryanised Bengalees.

In a statement here today, AAKSU general secretary Kamal Narayan Koch said that the Rajbongshi language has been listed as a corrupt form of Bangla during the survey of the Indian languages. It has implied that the Koches, who constitute an independent entity as a Mongoloid ethnic group, are a part of the Aryanised Bengalees. The move to describe the Koches as Koch-Rajbongshis has thus proved detrimental to this ethnic group.

Attempts made by various circles to describe the Koches as Koch-Rajbongshis are tantamount to sabotaging the long-standing demand of this ethnic group to get itself enlisted as a Scheduled Tribe. The language of the Koches belongs to the Tibeto-Burman group, not to an Aryanised group of languages.

Anybody trying to describe the Koches as Koch-Rajbongshis is attempting at distorting the history of this ethnic group, said the AAKSU general secretary.

He also warned of stern measures against all those who describe the Koches as Koch-Rajbongshis.
