Koch Rajbanshis protest over Kamatapur

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 21 - The All Koch Rajbanshi Students Union (AKRSU) on Tuesday reiterated its demand for a separate Kamatapur state and ST status and staged a sit-in demonstration on the bank of the Dighalipukhuri here. Activists of the All Koch Rajbanshi Mohila Samiti and Chilaray Sena (AKRMSCS) also took part in the demonstration.

The students body while slamming the political parties said that neither the Congress nor the BJP bothered to resolve the long standing demands of the community. President of the student body, Biswajit Ray said that the Congress that ruled the country for several decades betrayed the aspirations of the community. The Centre has always been apathetic towards the grievances of the community. The Congress that was in power for so many decades did not address our issue, said Ray.

The student leader also criticized the ruling saffron party and said that the party also did not fulfil the promise that it made before the Lok Sabha elections. The student body submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister insisting that its demands be met at the earliest.

Our community members are fed up with the false assurances of the political parties. Even the BJP by going back on its promise has proved that it is hungry for power and not concerned about the problems of the people, said Ray, warning that the Koch Rajbanshi community will give a befitting answer to the political parties playing with the communitys sentiments during the Assembly election next year.

The BJP is dreaming of coming to power in Assam. We will not allow this dream to be fulfilled if the party does not solve our problems, Ray said, adding that the student body will continue its agitation until its demands are met and in the coming days, it will intensify its movement.
