Knowledge of universe only a fraction

GUWAHATI, April 30 - The mystery and majesty of creation of elements and the infiniteness of space and enormity of the universe were explained by eminent astrophysicist and former Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University Dr Hiralal Duarah at a meeting of the Guwahati Senior Citizens� Association (GSCA) held at the Pensioners� Bhawan here today.

The function was presided over by senior journalist DN Chakravartty.

In his discourse, Dr Duarah analysed the process of exploration of the perplexing number of galaxies that constitute the grandeur of the infinite space.

Dr Duarah also mentioned man�s eternal quest to unfathom the hidden mystery of the universe and said that whatever information mankind had been able to garner in the last centuries of man�s pursuit of knowledge on the universe due to the relentless endeavour of scientists, constituted only a microscopic fraction of the undiscovered mysteries of space.

Several senior citizens including Jagat Bora, Ramanikanta Deka, Mohini Gogoi, Bijulee Sarma and Dipen Duarah participated in the discussion.

Earlier, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, member in charge of administration, welcomed the guests and read out the proceedings of the last meeting. Krishna Lahkar, member finance, presented the financial statement. Hem Sarma, member public relations, introduced Dr Duarah to the audience and referred to his contribution towards the enrichment of scientific research in the northeastern part of the country.

In the Bihu programme which followed, M Hazarika, Hem Sarma, Jagat Bora, Mridula Kakati Hazarika and M Gogoi enthralled the audience with their songs and dances.
