KMSS stir against dams

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, June 30 Voluntary organization Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) today organized a demonstration at Sadiya Chapakhowa demanding steps to shelve all the proposed mega-dam hydel projects in Arunachal Pradesh.

The demonstrators also blocked the NH-37 for some time.

According to a KMSS press release here, addressing the demonstrators, Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK All Mising Students Union) president Johan Doley, president of the Sadiya Mahkuma Suraksha Samiti Jogananda Burhagohain and president of Sadiya Mahkuma Mahila Samannoyrakshi Samiti Juri Gogoi made an appeal to the people to resist all the moves to set up the mega-dam hydel projects in Arunachal Pradesh.

KMSS secretary Akhil Gogoi demanded steps to demolish all the under-construction mega-dam projects located in Arunachal Pradesh. These dams will turn Assam into a wetland in the rainy season. On the other hand, the rivers because of the excessive removal of the boulders from their beds would bury several Upper Assam areas under sand.

These projects are also going to make the indigenous people of Arunachal Pradesh vulnerable to cultural invasion because of the large scale influx of outsiders for project implementation, Gogoi said.

The demonstrators also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of the State through the SDO (Civil) of Sadiya.
