KMSS seeks waterlogging solution

By Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, Dec 29 - The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) in collaboration with its sister organisations on Monday gheraoed the office of the Municipality at Graham Bazaar here in support of their demands like permanent solution to the perennial water logging and arrests of officials involved in collecting illegal tax in the garb of parking fees in sixteen different locations in the city among others.

The KMSS joined by Chatra Mukti Sangram Samiti, Nari Mukti Sangram Samiti and Chah Sharmaik Mukti Sangram Samiti staged a protest march from Amollapatty Natya Mandir to the office of Dibrugarh Municipal Board before staging the gherao. The protestors who held banners and posters raised slogans, criticising the faulty policies of the municipality.

The peasant organisation has demanded that municipality institute an expert committee to study and suggest ways to solve the water logging and artificial flood problem in the city. They also demanded that the recommendations of the expert team must be implemented within three months.

Further, the organisation asked the municipality as to how parking fees were collected in sixteen different locations of the city without official tenders and orders when only six areas had been legally identified for the purpose. The protesting KMSS activists demanded that all officials engaged in patronising these illegal parking fees be booked and punished.

The other demands of the peasant organisation included, protecting the historic structure of the erstwhile Dr John Berry White Nursing School and streamlining the collection of taxes from houses and commercial establishments etc. The municipality has been asked to put up notice boards on street sides and residential areas to show the tax rates of houses and commercial establishments.
