GUWAHATI, Oct 30 Voluntary organization Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) today hit out at Power Minister Pradyut Bordoloi for his yesterdays comments on the mega-dam issue. The people of the State will pull down the Congress in the forthcoming Assembly elections for its sin of siding with the mega-hydel power lobby, warned the voluntary organization.

In a statement, the voluntary organization has demanded an independent survey for all the under construction and proposed hydroelectric power projects of the region. Until this survey is completed the ongoing construction activities of the hydel projects of the region should be kept in abeyance, said the voluntary organization.

It has criticised the Power Minister for his stand on the NHPC and the expert group. The issues connected with the Lower Subansiri Hydel Power Project are not related to structural engineering alone. They have geological, environmental and socio-economic aspects.

But the Russian firm named by the States Power Department in its suggestion to the NHPC for engaging the foreign firms, is connected with designing and installing the hydroelectric projects. On the other hand, the Swiss firm named by the Department in this connection, is a consultancy firm working in the field of hydroelectric power generation, said the voluntary organization.

The voluntary organization will send a memorandum to the Prime Minister on November 2 next with the signature of one lakh people. The memorandum will have the demand of cancelling all the proposals for setting up mega-dam projects in the NE region, said the organization.

The Dhemaji District Students Union has also expressed serious resentment over the statement made by the Power Minister yesterday. It has reminded the Minister that the expert group was constituted in a tripartite meeting held under his presidentship. But since the recommendations of the expert group have gone in favour of the people, the Minister is now favouring re-assessment of the LSHEP through foreign firms.

Moreover, the Ministers move to get the re-assessment done at the behest of the NHPC also leaves scopes to doubt the intention of the Government.

But whatever may be the case, the construction of the LSHEP should be kept in abeyance till there is a final decision on its impacts, demanded the students body.
