Kirtinath Hazarika�s statue unveiled

GOLAGHAT, June 20 � A bronze statue of �Asom Surya� Kirtinath Hazarika, a prominent journalist and writer was inaugurated today by film director Munin Barua.

Unveiling the statue, Munin Barua highlighted the manifold achievements of late Kirtinath Hazarika. Born at Golaghat, Kirtinath Hazarika passed his matriculation in the first division from Golaghat Govt Bezbarua High School. He was the founder editor of the leading Assamese daily Danik Asam. He was also elected as the president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha and was the recipient of several national awards namely the Srimanta Sankardev Award, BD Goenka Award and Best Asian Statesman Award from the Philippines. His life was an epitome of statesmanship and literary and journalistic acumen.

The meeting was held at the Govinda Bezbarua Park under the presidentship of Dilip Tamuly, principal, GGHSS and was addressed by Munin Barua, Dr Azit Barua, ex-chairman GMB and Dwipen Dutta, a senior journalist.

The statue of late Kirtinath Hazarika was donated by his son Anjan Hazarika and Monika Hazarika of Guwahati. The statue has been sculpted by Biju Kr Das. The function was organised by the alumni of the Golaghat Govt Bezbarua High School where Md Matiur Rahman, a prominent journalist, was the chief guest.

Earlier, Pikumoni Dutta, general secretary of the Alumni Association, explained the objectives of the meeting. Several well-wishers lit lamps on the statues of Kirtinath Hazarika, Jiban Tamuli and Govinda Bezbarua.

The vote of thanks was offered by Anjan Hazarika, the son of late Kirtinath Hazarika.
