Kin urge Centre to rescue Silchar youth

By Correspondent

SILCHAR, Jan 30 - Family members of Joyful Rongmei, a youth from Silchar, are passing through sleepless nights.

According to family sources, Joyful, along with 10 others of the Indian Ship Mt Maroon are imprisoned in Nigeria since July 2014. Joyful, a resident of Naga village near Fatak Bazar in Silchar was working in the ship as a cook.

Sources said that Joyfuls mother Gaisinglou Kabui has cautioned the Centre to commit suicide if the Government fails to bring her son back to India.

According to the reports, 11 members of the ship were arrested for allegedly sailing on to Nigerian shores.

Interestingly, it is learnt that despite repeated appeals and requests, Gaisinglou was not allowed to meet the External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj, during her recent visit to Silchar in December last year. We were not allowed to meet the External Affairs Minister even after several requests made to the local BJP office bearers. Joyful was the sole bread earner in the family. If the Government is unable to bring him back, we must be permitted to kill ourselves, Gaisinglou warned.

Meanwhile, Susmita Dev, Member of Parliament from Silchar, has urged the External Affairs Minister to verify the matter and sought her intervention to release the youth at the earliest.
