By Correspondent

TURA, July 5 The border regions of Assam-Meghalaya near Mankachar have once again gone into panic after the discovery of the body of a 53 year-old man kidnapped five days ago.

The Assam resident who was working as a overseer of some work near Waribok, was kidnapped, on June 28 about 25 kms from Tura in West Garo Hills.

The 53 year-old Abdul Latif was a resident of Dayarchar under South Salmara police station and was working in Garo Hills. His body was found on the banks of the Ringgi river, near Waribok, this morning. He was killed with a single shot to the chest.

According to residents of Latifs village, the kidnappers had demanded an amount of Rs 30 lakh from the family of the victim. We received information later that there was negotiation between the kidnappers and the family and an amount of Rs 1.5 lakh was agreed for the release of Latif. However, after the payment of ransom, they went back on the agreement and he was killed, said SP of South Salmara, M Gayan, over phone from South Salmara.

The police had a tough time controlling an agitated crowd when the body of Latif was brought back to the village. It took a huge effort on the part of the Assam police and the local administration to pacify the crowd.

The West Garo Hills police suspect the role of GNLA behind the kidnapping and killing of the overseer.
