KHNAM candidate replies to notice

By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, March 27 - One of the two candidates for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat, whose nomination papers were kept on hold, today replied to Returning Officer Abhishek Bhagotia following a notice served yesterday.

Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) candidate THS Bonney sent his reply to the Returning Officer in a sealed envelope this afternoon.

However, the other candidate Justice Kharbasanti of the CPI is yet to file his reply, although he has time till 11 pm tomorrow.

Bhagotia told The Assam Tribune that the decision on the two candidates would be taken together tomorrow. On the day of withdrawal of candidature, the decision on the two candidates will be taken, he said.

Objections were raised against Bonneys candidature by KHNAM president Pyndapborthiaw Saibon who filed a complaint, armed with a Meghalaya High Court order which recognised him as the party president recently.

Bonney has filed his nomination papers and mentioned Nongrum as the party president. Saibon has alleged in his complaint that Bonney has not been nominated as the party candidate.

On the other hand, Kharbasanti has not revealed some of his financial liabilities in his declaration form. An objection was raised by the bank concerned and thereafter, his nomination papers were also kept on hold.

Meanwhile, Bhagotia said randomisation of the EVMs will take place on March 29 at the strongroom in Polo. Candidates will be called to witness for themselves the entire process.

Moreover, 25 Bharat Electric Limited (BEL) engineers are scheduled to arrive to the State. These engineers will be stationed during the polling process to oversee that the EVMs function to their optimum levels, the Returning Officer added.
