SHILLONG, May 19 The Meghalaya High Court sent Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council Adelbert Nongrum to jail for contempt of court on Monday evening, but he was granted bail today.

Nongrum was sent to jail by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Uma Nath Singh and Justice TNK Singh. Nongrum was earlier summoned by the court after he questioned the decision of the courts ruling, which banned issuance of certificates by traditional heads.

The KHADC CEM was sent to jail around 9.30 pm on Monday night after a prolonged court hearing that spanned right from the morning.

Till then in view of your acts of committing criminal contempt on the face of this court, you are detained in custody in exercise of powers under Section 14 of the Contempt of Courts Act read with Article 215 of the Constitution of India, the court said.

The order further said that Nongrum has, by his statement in the local media, shown contempt to the law of the land and also to the Constitution of India.

However, the court allowed Nongrum to file a showcause statement and apply for bail. The KHADC CEM sought bail, which was granted. The next date of hearing of his case has been fixed on June 15.
