DIBRUGARH, May 5 - The Khanikar Park here, which is officially known as the Mahatma Gandhi Sishu Udyan, was reopened on Friday to members of the public after a inaugural ceremony in the afternoon. Said to be a unique childrens park of its kind in the State, the facility has been equipped with a toy train, water activities and various childrens play equipment. After all that running and playing, the park authorities have also put up a food hut to cater to the hunger pangs of the visitors.

Dibrugarh MP Rameswar Teli inaugurated the park, with local BJP MLAs and district officials in attendance.

The park, which falls under the Lahowal Assembly area, was earlier a major recreation centre for the citizens here. The new facilities have added to the attraction of the park. Lahowal MLA Rituparna Baruah said the facility will now be a major magnet for children from all over upper Assam.

Meanwhile, three more parks are in various stages of construction in the city here. These are located at Nirmaligaon, Jhalukpara and Chowkidinghee. All these have been financed by the Zila Parishad and MLA LAD funds, said Baruah.

In another function at Jokai near here Friday afternoon, the Jokai Botanical Garden and Germplasm Park have been thrown open to the public after prolonged and intense renovation. This park is of high interest to naturalists and biologists. Other visitors too will find the park interesting for its orchids and well-planned flora collection.
