AGARTALA, Nov 14 - The Tripura Central University is facing a major crisis with some key posts lying vacant. Even after two months, the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has not been able to find a suitable candidate for the post of Vice Chancellor of the university.
The Vice Chancellor�s post fell vacant when Dr VL Dharurkar submitted his resignation in September after a purported sting video showed him allegedly accepting a bribe.
On the other hand, the in-charge Vice Chancellor, Prof Sangram Singh, expressed his desire to go on voluntary retirement last week. The university also does not have a full-fledged Registrar since the retirement of Sanit Debroy.
Significantly, the Tripura Central University has been running without a Chancellor for seven years. Governor Ramesh Bias, Rector of the university, is yet to take any visible step to put things right.
Uttam Das, who looks after financial matters of the varsity and who is scheduled to retire after two months, has also been facing allegations of submitting a fake SC certificate.
�Can any institution or organisation deliver excellence under such conditions? Only the MHRD can bring order to the varsity,� a senior faculty member said, requesting anonymity. He said a move was initiated to fill up 70 teaching and non-teaching posts in August, but it is yet to be completed.
�If the process is not completed within three months, the entire procedure will have to be cancelled. The in-charge VC has no power to move forward in this regard,� he said.
A Dean of the varsity lamented the poor academic atmosphere, lack of quality research work and poor performance by students.
Tripura University, the first university of the State, came into being on October 2, 1987, and became a Central university in 2007.
