SILCHAR, June 17 - In the wake of massive damage caused by floods, Minister for Water Resources Keshav Mahanta visited Barak Valley today to take stock of the overall situation.
After landing at the Silchar Airport, Mahanta witnessed the damage caused by floods at Udharbondh constituency in Cachar district. Thereafter, the Minister reached Borkhola constituency and learnt about the condition of the weak embankments. The Minister also witnessed the plight of the people across greater Malugram area and headed for Karimganj and Hailakandi districts.
�The situation is alarming across the State. I have visited the adversely affected areas and taken stock of the extent of damage across Barak Valley,� the Minister told reporters at the Circuit House. The Minister was accompanied by DIG (SR) Debraj Upadhyay, Cachar Deputy Commissioner Dr S Laxmanan and other departmental officials.
The water level of Barak river at Annapurna Ghat gauge station in Silchar was 20.66 metres at 7 pm today.
On the other hand, it is learnt that a team of officials lead by Inspector Shahanowaz Rizwi along with others visited Raipur near Ranighat Bridge and carried out rescue operations across flood-affected areas of Peladohor, Nayagram and Nijjoynagar Revenue Circle and rescued 211 persons. Food packets were also distributed among the victims. Borkhola MLA Kishore Nath accompanied the team and monitored the rescue operation.
Meanwhile, according to sources, around 30 roads, including Gumrah-Nathanpur Road, Katigorah Harinagar Road, Mahadebpur Part-1 and Part-2, Shalchapra Sibabri Road, Kandigram and other roads were affected.
In what could be called a hapless situation owing to the flooded condition, dead bodies in Karimganj had to be cremated over the Assam-Tripura National Highway. According to sources, two bodies had to be cremated on the National Highway at Sarif Nagar area of the district. The bodies of Nimu Namasudra and Khagen Namasudra were brought by boats for cremation.
