Kenye elected to RS from Nagaland

DIMAPUR, March 15 - Naga People�s Front (NPF) candidate KG Kenye has been elected unopposed to the vacant Rajya Sabha seat for Nagaland.

In a press release, returning officer N Benjamin Newmai stated that there was only one candidate till the last date for filing of nomination paper and accordingly, no poll was conducted. The release said the biennial election to the Council of States was notified on March 4, 2016 and the last date for filling up or nomination paper was on March 11, while scrutiny of the nomination paper was taken up on March 12. Kenye is from Chizami vilage under Phek district of Nagaland. The 60-member Nagaland Assembly has 48 NPF, 4 BJP and 8 Independent MLAs. While BJP as an ally of the NPF-led DAN government has extended support to the NPF nominee for the lone seat, the eight Independent MLAs are also with the NPF.

The lone Rajya Sabha seat from Nagaland had fallen vacant following the demise of sitting MP Khekiho Zhimomi in November last year. His tenure was to end in April.
