KC Das Commerce College National Teacher Award to Prof Nagen Saikia

GUWAHATI, Nov 7 - The KC Das Commerce College Educational Trust conferred its prestigious National Teacher Award 2019 on renowned educationist and litterateur Professor Nagen Saikia at a function held today in the college premises on the occasion of the 36th foundation day celebration of the college.

The award was presented by the chief guest of the function Professor Mihir Kanti Chaudhuri, advisor to Education Department, Govt of Assam. The award carries a cheque of one lakh rupees, a citation, a japi, a seleng, a bouquet and a book titled Assam: Land and People published by KC Das Commerce College.

In his acceptance speech Professor Saikia said he feels happy when he is considered as only a teacher. He threw light on various aspects of language and its attachment with culture. �Language cannot be restricted to any region, it is universal in nature,� he said.

Speaking on this occasion, chief guest Professor Chaudhuri lauded the role played by the trust in honouring prominent personalities who have set an example in their respective fields.

Expressing his gratitude to the trust for conferring the honour on a legendary figure like Prof Saikia, Professor Chaudhuri stressed the need for promoting local languages along with English. He urged the teaching community to mentally prepare themselves to adopt the new education policy which is on the anvil.

The trust also felicitated Prof Kalyan Kumar Nath, retired teacher of Gauhati Commerce College for his notable contribution in the field of commerce education in the State. Meritorious students, alumni and student achievers were also awarded and felicitated.

Cash prizes and trophies of the all Assam competition on Tafazzul Ali�s songs held on November 6 were also distributed at the function. Jugal Kishor Rabha of DK College Mirza, Deepsikha Deka of Cotton University and Jitumoni Kalita of Pragjyotish College got the top three positions respectively.

Earlier, Dr Hrishikesh Baruah, the Principal of the college and secretary of the trust, delivered the welcome speech. Minati Chaudhury, president of the college governing body and Dr Runjun Phookun, Vice Principal of the college were also present at the meeting.
