GUWAHATI, Oct 26 � The Sadou Asam Karmachari Parishad (SAKP) will observe November 1 as the Karmachari Swahid Divas in memory of those of its members who laid their lives during the anti-alien Assam agitation in the 1980s.
It needs mention here that on November 1, 1980, SAKP member Dilip Chakravorty was shot dead by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel while he was taking part in a Dispur Chalo march. Chakravorty was the first martyr among the State Government employees during the Assam agitation.
On November 1 next, the SAKP district units will observe the Karmachari Swahid Divas throughout the State. The central function on the occasion will be held at the Panjabari Karmachari Bhawan under the aegis of the Guwahati district unit of the SAKP. The Dispur Anchalik Karmachari Parishad will assist the Guwahati district SAKP unit in the observance, said the SAKP in a statement here.
The central programme includes Smriti-tarpan at 8 am, chanting from the scriptures at 8.30 am and a meeting to commemorate the martyrs at 10am.
On the occasion, the Karmachari Bhawan will be illuminated with earthen lamps in the evening, said the SAKP in its statement.
