Karimganj team meets Bangla minister over border trade

KARIMGANJ, Feb 17 � With a view to improving border trade with Bangladesh, the Karimganj exporters-importer union have demanded restoration of the Karimganj-Mahisashan-Sahajpur railway line. A group of representative of this union met Bangladesh Finance Minister AM Abdul Muhit at Sylhet in Bangladesh recently.

The chairman of Karimganj Development Authority and general secretary of the Karimganj Export-Importers Union urged the Bangladesh minister to consider the direct railway service between Silchar and Dhaka. Improved communication would encourage in creating more export-import opportunities between the North Eastern States of India and Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Government has decided to restore train links with Tripura first and then expand this service to Karimganj, disclosed the Bangladesh finance minister. He also informed that Bangladesh Government is all set to start dredging the Kushiara river which flows through Karimganj and later enters Bangladesh.

To gear up international trade with Bangladesh, a trade centre at Sutarkandi along Karimganj-Bangladesh border has started functioning. The Bangladesh Finance Minister has been requested to set up an international trade centre on the Bangladesh side of the Karimganj border so that a new avenues in the field of export and import could be created.

The Finance Minister of Bangladesh assured the delegation that his government would consider these demands.
