SILCHAR, Nov 1 - Even as the deputy commissioners of Karimganj district of Assam and Mamit district of Mizoram along with other officials met across the table, impasse continues at the inter-State border between the two neighbouring States.
The meeting held at Ichabeel Tea Estate in Karimganj district saw Karimganj Deputy Commissioner Anbamuthan MP interact with Dr Lalrozama, Deputy Commissioner Mamit district on key issues including withdrawal of Mizoram Police from Chotobubirband and Medlicherra areas of the bordering district of Assam, inter-State movement of vehicles and maintenance of peace and public tranquillity at the inter-State boundary.
Requesting his Mamit counterpart to withdraw the Armed Mizoram Police forces, Anbamuthan MP said, Chotobubirband and Medlicherra areas are very much within the boundary of Assam as per the Survey of India map and protection of land is of paramount importance to Karimganj district administration. Hence, we request the Mamit district administration to withdraw the police forces in order to maintain peace and tranquillity in the areas. The Karimganj Deputy Commissioner had also requested the Mamit DC for a specific timeline for withdrawal of the forces regarding which the Mamit district administration expressed their inability in the meeting.
Superintendent of Police Karimganj Mayank Kumar, also shared his views in the meeting saying that the deployment of forces of Mizoram would not help to calm the tense situation in the mentioned areas but might escalate it.
In his address during the discussion, Deputy Commissioner of Mamit district Dr Lalrozama said, the Armed Mizoram Police Forces have been deployed and stationed in the said areas for maintenance of peace and tranquillity therein.
Officials in the meeting, however, decided that the administration on either side shall work together for the maintenance of peace and public tranquillity at the inter-State boundary and the district administration of Karimganj and Mamit would remain vigilant for maintenance of normal flow of vehicular traffic, especially carrying essential commodities viz., LPG etc., from either side without any blockade or obstruction.
On the other hand, while a similar meeting between the Deputy Commissioners of Cachar and Kolasib districts was also scheduled, the talks could not be held as Kolasib DC could not turn up to attend the meeting.
Meanwhile, according to sources, over 100 Mizoram-bound trucks were stranded at Lailapur as the blockade along the National Highway 306 in Cachar by the local residents continued while Assam-bound trucks had returned from Mizoram.
