Karimganj-Kolkata rail service via Bangladesh

By Debasish Banik

BADARPUR, Oct 21 - The Central Government has given the green signal to the Karimganj-Mahisashan-Kolkata Railway service via Bangladesh, which was a very old demand of Karimganj MP Radheshyam Biswas.

Biswas said that besides raising questions in Parliament on the issue, he also wrote letters to the Railway Ministry, mentioning the logic behind the demand. In an exclusive interview to ANN Service from Badarpur, explaining the logical reason behind the Karimganj-Kolkata Railway service, via Bangladesh, Biswas said, It was my dream for a long time to have a train service from Karimganj-Mahisashan border to Kolkata, via Aakhaura of Bangladesh, as much time will be reduced. According to my view, to go to Kolkata, we have to travel 1,100 km by road, but if we go to Kolkata from Mahisashan, via Aakhaura of Bangladesh, then approximately 600 km distance will be easily reduced. I mentioned this in my letter addressed to Ministry of Railways. In the letter, I earnestly requested to the Railway Ministry to sanction sufficient funds for this purpose, and in this connection, the Union Ministry has given the green signal. The Centre has decided to give loans at a cheap rate to the Hasina Government in Bangladesh to set up a broad gauge line in Bangladesh, which was gladly accepted by the latter for implementing this railway project speedily. Replying to another question, Radheshyam Biswas said, it will be a epoch-making instant, if this railway service gets going.

Replying to another question, Biswas informed that in the ensuing session, he will raise the issue of declaration of Badarpur Rail Division immediately.
