Karimganj admin clears encroached areas

By Staff Correspondent

SILCHAR, Oct 10 - The Karimganj district administration has taken a tough stance against the alleged encroachment of stretches of Assam land by a section of people residing in the villages of Mizoram along the inter-state border.

Led by the Karimganj Deputy Commissioner Anbamuthan MP, a team of administrative and police officials on Friday carried out a drive to make areas of Cheragi GP under Ratabari constituency of the district encroachment free.

According to sources, a large section of reserve forest land in Cheragi were encroached by the villagers from Mizoram as they began vegetation therein. Acting on the complaints, the Karimganj district administration rushed to the spot and cleared off the trespassed portions of land belonging to Assam.

When contacted for a reaction, Deputy Commissioner Anbamuthan MP told The Assam Tribune on Saturday, there were issues with people from villages in Mizoram occupying at least 500 meters of Assam territory and some of the villagers were found to be engaged in jhum cultivation claiming the parts of land belonging to Mizoram. But the map showed that the land well and truly belongs to Assam and hence the encroached portions were cleared off.
