Karbi New Year celebrated

GUWAHATI, Feb 3 � The Karbi New Year, the first month when Karbis select land for jhum cultivation, was celebrated throughout the district of Karbi Anglong by various celebration committees on Monday, an official release received here said.

In this connection, an official central celebration was held under the initiative of Arts and Culture department of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council at Council Colony, Diphu. The day-long celebration started with Hemphu Karkli and release of pigeons and balloons in the morning.

Mongalsing Engti, chairman of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council presided over an open session held on the occasion. Birensing Engti, MP of 3-Autonomous District attended it as the chief guest. In his speech, he praised the present Council authority for its major development works in the district including amendment of the 60-year-old Council rules in the light of present context. He also revealed that the foundation stone of the medical college will be laid at Diphu within June or July and the sugarcane processing mill will be established in west Karbi Anglong. The MP also stressed on more industry in the district for rapid development.

He also said that Art 244 (A) would be implemented very soon and necessary talk with State Government and Central Government in this regard were over. He urged the Council authority to work for enhancement of revenue so that Council can make its own plan. He also said that for proper implementation of rural scheme, there would be village council in the district.

The MP also mentioned that Karbi Anglong will have an engineering college and full-fledged university.

Bidyasing Rongpi, EM, who attended as the guest of honour, stressed on preservation of Karbi culture and tradition and also for month-long celebration of Karbi New Year. Bhuban Chandra Terang, EM and Pran Kumar Dutta, ex-MAC of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council also attended it.

Earlier, Dhaneswar Engti, Deputy Secretary, KAAC, explained the objectives of the function which ended with the vote of thanks by Harsing Teron, Deputy Secretary, KAAC. A cultural function was organised after the end of open session, the release added.
