Karbi Anglong DC draws flak for comments on lynching

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 10 - Following his callous remarks over the lynching of two youths in Karbi Anglong, its Deputy Commissioner Mridul Kumar Mahanta has drawn severe flak in the social media, with many demanding his immediate removal.

Many socio-cultural organisations and people from various walks of life have taken strong exception to the irresponsible comments aired by Mahanta.

Chief Secretary TY Das too told mediapersons today that the State Government was seriously looking into the matter. I have already spoken to him on the matter, said Das.

Speaking to the media after the incident, Mahanta had questioned if the two victims had sought permission from the administration to visit the secluded village and wondered what they were doing there at 8 pm.

His comment triggered sharp reactions, with many in social media even doubting his credentials as the administrative head of a district.

AASU general secretary Lurinyoti Gogoi termed Mahantas comment reckless and irresponsible and said that as the head of the district administration, the DC owes responsibility for the incident and should be given exemplary punishment. It is a clear case of failure of the administration, he said.

Questions are being asked if the village where the two youths visited was a restricted area and if any advisory was issued by the administration asking people to seek permission before visiting any place in the district. Also, people are wondering if there was any restriction in the district barring people from venturing out after 8 pm.

Do we have to inform the nearest police station if we are planning for a timeout at the nearest tourist destination? Pranjal Sarma, a TV journalist, said in a Facebook post.
