IMPHAL, March 14 - Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Students� Union president Kanhaiya Kumar and Rohit Vemula (posthumously) of the Ambedkar Studies Association, Hyderabad University were jointly awarded 2016 Irom Sharmila Scholarship.
The scholarship which carries a lump sum of Rs 50,000, was instituted by faculty from Delhi University in 2012, in honour of Irom Sharmila�s dedicated and non-violent fight for democracy and constitutional values. The award is based on a combination of financial need, academic merit and contribution to society, according to Irom Sharmila Scholarship Committee (ISSC). The announcements are made annually on March 14, Sharmila�s birthday.
