IMPHAL, Sept 29 - After Senapati, Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts, Kangpokpi has become the fourth Open Defecation-Free (ODF) district in Manipur, sources said here on Friday. There are 16 districts in the State.

Rangtabali Waikhom, Deputy Commissioner of Kangpokpi district, declared Kangpokpi an ODF district on September 24 at a function organised by the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Kangpokpi, following the completion of household toilets for 18,056 families, the sources added.

According to Executive Engineer RK Deven of PHED, Kangpokpi division, the toilets were constructed for 6,420 households under the Kangpokpi Block, 5,291 under the Saitu Gamphazol Block and 6,345 households under the Saikul Block.

Senapati bordering Nagaland was declared as the first ODF district of Manipur at an official function in the Senapati district headquarters on March 28 this year. However, no official function was organised when the district administration subsequently named Bishnupur as the second ODF district of the State in June. Churachandpur achieved the ODF status on August 11. The declarations were made following the total construction of individual household latrines as per the baseline survey of 2012.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, while attending the function to celebrate completion of four years of the Narendra Modi-led Central Government under the banner Vishesh Sampark Abhiyan here in May, had announced that all the 27 towns of the State would be ODF by November this year.
