Kampur potters in dire straits

By CORRESPONDENT

KAMPUR, July 27 The potters of Kampur, generally known as Kumar in Assamese, came about 120 years ago. articularly during ceremonies.

There was a time when marriages and other ceremonies could not be imagined without the earthen utensils made by the potters. However, the potters are now facing acute trouble due to scarcity of the special clay used in making the earthen utensils.

People used the earthen utensils in large numbers during marriages and other functions as these are hygiene and do not spoil the qualities of soil as polythene, which has already destroyed the soil.

The potters have also faced difficulties in transporting the earthen utensils due to acute hike in prices of POL items.

The Government should come forward to help the potters to sustain one of the oldest industries of Assam. It is gathered that the potters settled in Kampur a long time ago and some of them even claim that pottery industry first began here, near Kampur Higher Secondary School.
