Kameshwari Festival on Feb 19-20

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 15 As in the recent past, the temple township of Kamakhya would again showcase top cultural performers during its two-day celebration of Indian music and dance. The 2010 edition of the popular Kameshwari Festival would be held on February 19 and 20.

Held at a grand setting it has already become an acclaimed cultural event in the region, and this year too is expected to generate interest among a cross-section of people.

At a press meet held today at Kamakhya, organisers informed that the Sri Sri Maa Kamakhya Temple Debuttar Board has arranged an elaborate array of dance programmes, instrumental and vocal music during the festival. Music and dance were at one point of time performed ceremoniously as part the worship of the Mother Goddess, and the descendants of musicians and dancers bear testimony to that tradition. The Debuttar Board has promoted the revival of old traditions, and such an endeavour has culminated in the Kameshwari music and dance festival.

Organisers have mentioned that the programmes will not only promote traditional aspects of the temple but also contribute towards boosting tourism in the State.

A press release stated that Saroja Vaidyanathan, Ustad Amzad Ali Khan and others will perform on February 19, and on the following day Minoti Khound, Nityananda Das, Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan and others would enthral the audience.

On both the days the programme would start around 6 pm and conclude close to midnight, the organisers added.
