GUWAHATI, Nov 9 � The Kamal Kumari Foundation has announced the outstanding achievers award for the year 2009 for excellence in the field of Art and Culture, Science and Technology and Journalism.
While the Kamal Kumari National Award for Excellence in Art, Culture, Science and Technology will be conferred on versatile singer Begum Parween Sultana Khan and leading aerospace scientist Prof Roddam Narasimha respectively, while veteran journalist Radhika Mohan Bhagawati has been chosen for the Siva Prasad Barooah National Award (Journalism).
This was informed by HP Barooah, a leading businessman and one of the trustees of the foundation during a press conference today.
The award, which carries a cash award of Rs 2 lakh each, besides a citation and a trophy will be presented during a function on November 10 at Pragjyoti ITA Centre for Performing Arts, Machkhowa.
Begum Parween Sultana Khan, who had lent her voice for numerous popular songs including Humey Tumse Pyar Kitna from the film Kudrat which won her the Filmfare best playback singer award in 1981, said, � I am very elated to have been chosen for the award. I belong to Assam and it feels really nice to get appreciation from my own people.�
Prof Roddam Narasimha, who was also present on the occasion, while expressing his happiness, told the gathering that he is very happy to see the development taking place in the State, especially in the communication sector.
The Kamal Kumari Foundation set up in memory of Kamal Kumari Barooah, the remarkable matriarch of the Khongiya Barooah family of Thengal, instituted the Kamal Kumari Award to promote excellence in the fields of Science, Technology and Cultural pursuits in 1990. Further, in 1999, the foundation instituted the Siva Prasad Barooah National Award for journalism in memory of the renowned planter and publisher.
Meanwhile, renowned dancer and actress Mamata Shankar will perform tomorrow at the function at the venue along with her troupe.
