Kalpana Patowary joins AGP

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 9 - Amid hectic poll preparations by the political parties to brighten their prospects, popular singer Kalpana Patowary today joined the AGP in a programme held at the party headquarters at Ambari here. Notably, the folk singer, who is also popular as Bhojpuri queen for her successful career in the Bhojpuri music industry, had joined the BJP in 2018 in Patna.

With the formation of a number of regional political parties in the State ahead of the ensuing Assembly elections in 2021, the AGP has stepped up its political activities under the leadership of party president Atul Bora. Patowary was among 500 people who joined the party today. Though the singer dropped a subtle hint about her willingness to contest the Assembly polls from Sorbhog, where she was born, she refrained from making any direct comment on it. It may be mentioned here that State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass is the sitting MLA from the Sorbhog constituency in Barpeta district and AGP is a member of the BJP-led ruling alliance in the State.

Welcoming the new members, Atul Bora said the AGPs strength would multiply in the days to come and the party would continue to reach out to the common people of Assam. As a regional force, we are fully committed to the cause of the indigenous population of Assam. Despite all the conspiracies against the AGP, we stand stronger due to the support of indigenous people of Assam, he said.

After joining the party, Kalpana Patowary said that as an Assamese, the cause of the welfare of indigenous population was paramount to her.

Stressing the importance of Clause six of the Assam Accord, she said implementation of this clause is important to protect the culture and identity of the indigenous people. More specifically, we should lay emphasis on the land rights of the local people, which is the most powerful tool to protect the indigenous identity, she added.

Party working president Keshab Mahanta and senior leaders Phani Bhushan Choudhury, Dr Kamala Kanta Kalita, Satyabrata Kalita, Manoj Saikia and others were present in the event.
