PATACHARKUCHI, Dec 26 - The All Assam Kalita Janagosthiya Students Union (AAKJSU) has criticised the state government for not fulfilling its long standing demand for Scheduled Tribe status.

In a press release issued here, the AAKJSU said the Kalita community has been deprived of many things, compared to other tribes. It said the demand for ST status has been on since 1988, but has still not been fulfilled. The AAKJSU demanded a development council in the name of Old Guwahati (Pragjyotishpur), which was the kingdom of the Kalita king in ancient times.

AAKJSU president Anupal Dutta Pathak, in the release, stated that if the government fails to respond to the demand of 70 lakh Kalita people of the state, then they will launch a democratic protest.

The AAKJSU demanded 50 per cent reservation in all government jobs for the next five years, and reservation in jobs under the UPSC and APSC. They also demanded 40 per cent reservation in medical and engineering seats in Assam, 45 MLA seats in Assam, four Lok Sabha seats and three Rajya Sabha seats from among Kalita people.
