Kali Ram Medhi remembered

GUWAHATI, Jan 27 � In the 62nd death anniversary function of Pandit Kali Ram Medhi, who was the third president of Asam Sahitya Sabha and the president of Kamrup Anusandhan Samity held here recently, eminent persons gathered in front of his marble statue in front of the Assam State Museum set up by the Asam Sahitya Sabha in his birth centenary in 1978.

Dr Birendra Nath Datta, Dr RC Deka, Ganesh Sarma, Prof Budhen Saikia, Dr AK Neog, Riju Hazarika, Homeswar Kalita, Gagan Adhikary, Sangeeta Kakati, Prosenjit Roy, Dr KC Talukdar, Durlav Mahanta, DN Choudhury, Dr Millie Kakati, Ashok Das and many distinguished persons offered flowers at Pandit Medhi�s statue.

Prof Biren Datta and Dayananda Pathak emphasised that in future meetings should be arranged to tell to the future generations about various works of Pandit Medhi as he was not only the writer of pioneering and monumental book on Assamese language and grammar but also a great writer on scientific subjects in 1920s and an efficient government officer of the rank of DC in British days and earned awards from all authorities. Principal Promode Bhattachyya wrote that Medhi published his book seven years before Bani Kanta Kakati and that too without any guide (unlike Kakati) and despite his huge official duties of colonial days.

Several relatives and family members of Kali Ram Medhi entertained the gathering with light refreshments. Director of the State Museum was present in the gathering till the end and offered his respect to the Pandit.
