KAAC to receive direct funding from Centre

By Correspondent

DIPHU, Nov 19 - Direct funding for the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) from the Central government, a long standing demand of the people of Karbi Anglong, has been successfully resolved, KAAC Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang has said.

All funds meant for the KAAC will be directly remitted by the Union government to the Council to do away with the needless delay of their release by the State Secretariat. The matter could not be resolved at the time of signing of the MoU in 1995 and the MoS in 2011, although the MoS provided for the amendment of Article 280 to bring the Council under the purview of the Finance Commission of India, he said.

Now, with the relentless efforts made by the team under my leadership, the Union government has agreed to effect direct funding of all Centrally-sponsored schemes to the Council, he said, congratulating Team Karbi Anglong and the people on this achievement.

Regarding Panchayat Raj, the CEM said that some political activists accused the BJP government of imposing the Panchayati Raj system in Karbi Anglong.

Therefore, to put the record straight from our side, I would like to inform you all that like Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram and other hill tribal areas of the North East, we have a Village Development Committee headed by a chairman, but the MIS in the government website maintains a uniform system throughout India, including Sixth Schedule areas as Gram Panchayat (GP) and its head as Sarpanch, he said.

Thats why our data was also entered as GP and Sarpanch on the website since the beginning, when the Congress government started the system. The same kind of data is also entered in the system for Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram, he clarified.
