Justice Lokur next CJ of Gauhati HC

NEW DELHI, June 22 � Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Justice Madan Bhimarao Lokur has been appointed as the next Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.

A communique issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan said in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.

Madan Bhimrao Lokur was earlier tipped to be appointed as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.

Justice Lokur comes from a family of judges � his father and grandfather were High Court judges.

Justice Lokur was born on December 31, 1953 and he did his early schooling in Delhi and later in Allahabad, but came back to Delhi to graduate from St Stephen�s College.

Later, he practised in the Delhi High Court and Supreme Court. He has a vast experience in civil, criminal, constitutional, revenue and service laws. He had also served as Additional Solicitor General of India in 1998. He continued in that post till he became an additional judge of Delhi High Court in 1999. He was elevated as the acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court in February.
