UDALGURI, Nov 24 � As the season belongs to harvesting of ripe paddy, herds of wild elephants have started creating terror along the entire Indo-Bhutan border of Udalguri district. Right from the northern belt of the border stretching from Dimakuchi in the west to Lalpani under Mazbat PS in the east along the Indo-Bhutan and Arunachal borders, wild elephants menace is being witnessed by the villagers in their paddy fields.
Talking to this correspondent, a farmer from Dimakuchi said that even though the Forest department was informed to take meaningful steps to relieve the farmers from this elephant menace, but no steps have so far been taken till date. Another farmer of Udalguri having his paddy field in Nepalpara village near Sapangaon in Udalguri alleged that the wild elephants have made access to the ripe paddy fields in large groups and it seems impossible to push them back and as a result, most of the paddy fields of the farmers have been destroyed by the wild jumbos. He also informed that the Forest department was already informed but till date no steps were seen taken by the department to push back the elephants to their habitats.
It is observed that due to unabated rapid deforestation and destruction of natural habitats of the wild elephants, they have no other option but to go to the human habitats to search for their food which is still to be understood by those who are really responsible for this tragedy of the wild animals.
BSS conference: Ahead of the forthcoming 50th annual session of Bodo Sahitya Sabha, the premier literary organisation of the region, the reception committee has completed half of its preparation to host the conference successfully. This was conveyed to this correspondent by Nilakanta Goyary, general secretary of the committee.
�We are waiting for the reaping of the matured paddy from the field which will be done by the farmers of the respective field where the proposed annual conference of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha is going to be held,� said Goyary.
He also informed that the initial process of repairing of roads near the construction site was already begun by the PWD and it is hoped that by the end of December, all the dilapidated PWD roads leading towards Udalguri town would wear a new look. All the members of the main reception and the sub committees have been doing the duties entrusted upon them satisfactorily and it is hoped that the conference would be a grand success with cooperation from all sides, he added.
