Judicial probe panel formed: Rockybul

GUWAHATI, July 20 � The Assam Government has constituted a judicial probe panel headed by retired Judge SK Kar to probe into the incidents of violence followed by death of three persons in police firing near Dispur on June 22. This was disclosed by Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain in the State Assembly today.

Hussain, who was replying to a short notice question by Prafulla Kumar Mahanta (AGP), said that after the judicial probe was ordered, the enquiry by additional Chief Secretary Surajit Mitra has been suspended.

The minister said that the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Guwahati city, DSP of Dispur Division and the officer in charge of the Dispur police station were entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining law and order on that day. He said that personnel of the paramilitary force and Assam Police were deployed in the area to work under the police officers and no officer of the paramilitary force was deployed.

The minister said that three persons were killed in police firing while two others received bullet injuries. He revealed that 24 civilians and 38 policemen were injured in the incident.
