By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 12 Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said that the State Government would institute a high-level judicial probe into the public distribution system (PDS) scam that has rocked the State.

"We are aware of the situation, and will institute a judicial inquiry. The public accounts committee (PAC) of the State Assembly detected excess issuance of four lakh bogus cards, and has made some recommendations. The Civil Supplies Department had also detected 1.37 lakh excess cards in the last two years," Gogoi said at a press conference.

Gogoi said that the Government was serious about ensuring the benefits to the genuine beneficiaries and prevent misuse of cards. Answering a question from this correspondent, the Chief Minister admitted that implementation of the recommendations of various inquiry commissions in the recent past had not been quite up to the mark.

"some of the recommendations might not have been implementedit should also be pointed out to the Government in the event of non-implementation of recommendations," Gogoi said.

The Chief Minister also stressed the need for revamping the entire PDS. "The PDS is gripped by anomalies not just in Assam but in many other States as wellwe are planning to revamp the PDS," he added.
