By Correspondent

NALBARI, May 29 The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nalbari organised a field day on Joymati, a Boro variety of rice cultivated under the technology showcasing programme of Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat on May 26 last.

Over a hundred farmers of the locality took part in the field day programme. The technology showcasing programme is going on in private-public partnership mode among Assam Agricultural University, KVK, Nalbari, District Agriculture office, Nalbari and farmers of the district since 2010 during different crop seasons. The KVK, Nalbari has provided high yielding seeds of Joymati along with the fertilisers and other necessary technical support to the farmers of Bori areas for growing Boro rice in 6.2-hectare areas. As the farmers of Bori faced total crop loss of Sali paddy during the last three years due to stagnant water in the crop fields, KVK, Nalbari decided to change the crop sequence to cope with the situation. The objective of the programme is to make the farmers aware about the alternate technology for rices to be grown in other season. The crop is presently at the ripening stage with an expected yield of around 5 to 5.5 tons per hectare.

Dr Om Prakash, Deputy Commissioner, Nalbari speaking as the chief guest said that the farmers should adopt the new technology provided by KVK, Nalbari. Dr Mridul Deka, programme coordinator, KVK, Nalbari expressed his sincere concern about the farmers condition in the area and suggested alternate measures by choosing the new crop variety Joymati as a summer paddy or early ahu variety released by AAU. Early ahu variety can be harvested before pre monsoon or before the onset of monsoon, he added. He also spoke about 49 different rice varieties released by AAU, Jorhat.

Joycharon Haloi, president, Nalbari Pathar Parichalana Samity also delivered few words to encourage the farmers for continuing the farming process with the new technologies developed by AAU. Among the local farmers, Kamini Barman and Tankeswar Barman expressed their gratitude towards the KVK and District Agriculture Office for providing them the new technology. The District Agriculture Officer also attended the programme. In the beginning the objective of organising such field day at Bori was explained by Ranjita Bezbaruah, scientist of KVK, Nalbari.
